The nearest major airports are Pisa (PSA) and Genoa (GOA). From Pisa, frequent trains reach La Spezia in about 1–1.5 hours; from Genoa the journey is similar. Florence and Milan airports are also options if you plan a longer Italian itinerary. Once you reach La Spezia Centrale or Levanto, regional trains run regularly into the five villages. Flying into Pisa is usually the most straightforward for most international visitors.

The train is by far the best way to reach and move around Cinque Terre. Regional trains from La Spezia or Levanto stop in each of the five villages (Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso). The Cinque Terre Treno Card (or Cinque Terre Card + train) covers unlimited train travel between the villages plus access to the hiking trails. Trains are frequent in season and the ride between villages takes only a few minutes. Book or buy the card on arrival for convenience.

Driving into Cinque Terre is strongly discouraged. The villages are largely car-free, roads are extremely narrow and parking is scarce and expensive. If you arrive by car, leave it in La Spezia or Levanto and continue by train. Having a car is only useful if you plan to explore the wider Ligurian coast or inland villages outside the park. Inside the five villages, walking and the train are the only practical options.

Many Mediterranean cruise ships dock at La Spezia, just a short train ride from the Cinque Terre villages. Shore excursions and independent train transfers make a day visit easy and popular. From the port you can reach Riomaggiore or Monterosso in under 30 minutes by train. Some smaller ships occasionally call at nearby ports, but La Spezia is the main gateway for cruise passengers discovering the five villages.

Two full days are enough to visit several villages, walk a section of the coastal path and enjoy a sunset aperitivo. Three days let you slow down, hike more of the trails and experience the quieter side of each village. Four or five days are ideal if you want to combine hiking, swimming, boat trips and a more relaxed pace without rushing between the five towns.
April to early June and September to October offer the best balance of good weather, open trails and manageable crowds. July and August are hot, very busy and more expensive. Winter is quiet and atmospheric but some hotels, restaurants and trail sections close, and boat services are limited. Spring wildflowers and autumn light make the villages especially photogenic.
Italian is the main language, though English is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants and ticket offices. The currency is the Euro (€). Cards are accepted in most places, but small bars, gelaterias and some trail kiosks prefer cash. ATMs are available in the larger villages (especially Monterosso and Riomaggiore). Carry a little cash for convenience.
Trains between the five villages are frequent and the classic way to hop from one to another. The Blue Trail (Sentiero Azzurro) is the iconic coastal path linking the villages on foot — check which sections are open before you set out. Seasonal ferry boats offer a beautiful alternative view from the sea. Wear good walking shoes; the paths can be steep and uneven. Inside each village everything is walkable.
